Femme-Castelet (working title)
All ages | big stage plateau
The story of the Mirabal sisters calls out and invites us once again to explore the fundamental struggle of women for the defense and equality of women’s rights (already broached in L’un dans l’Autre and Les Folles).
Patria, Minerva and María Teresa, were the heroines and martyrs of the struggle against the dictator Rafael Trujillo, who led the Dominican Republic from 1930 to 1961.
They were also nicknamed the “Mariposas” sisters (Butterflies). Besides the poetic figure of metamorphosis, what interests us is the resistance of those women to the predatory and bloodthirsty male, and therefore the access to knowledge and professional ambitions as much as seizing arms and commiting absolutely to a political ideal.
We wish to draw our inspiration from this militant, real and yet fanciful story to create a cruel, “sweet and sour” fable. A sort of ironic, dreamlike pop waltz, which could, without a word, evoke the fight against the violence inflicted on women.
With the intention of gathering three women with three male puppets on stage, the project is to question the male/female relationship through the body/puppetinteraction, to confront real bodies with figurehead, resisting bodies and consenting bodies, powerful bodies and denied bodies.
We also want to question our relationships of deep equality, our attractions, our murky desires.
The principle of woman as puppet stage brings focus on a feminine figure in mutation, on the body reinvented, reified, musicalized, blurred, on the notions of a claimed or occupied body and the “absent presence” of the puppeteer.
The stage woman: the woman who bears.
